Why a Standardized Testing Protocol Beats Guesswork

A single test result doesn't mean much on its own. A player who jumps 210cm in a standing broad jump could be having a great day, a bad day, or simply be a different size than the player being compared to. Without something to measure it against, one number is closer to trivia than insight.
What makes testing useful isn't the test. It's the repetition.
The problem with one-off testing
Most youth hockey testing happens once: a tryout, a combine event, a single evaluation day. That single data point gets treated as if it describes the player, when really it only describes the player on that one day, under that one set of conditions.
Worse, when the method changes between events, a different surface, a different person timing the sprint, a different warm-up routine, the numbers aren't even comparable to each other, let alone useful for tracking anything.
What a repeated, fixed protocol fixes
A standardized protocol solves this by holding almost everything constant except the player. Same tests, same order, same equipment, same interval, ideally the same person running it. When those variables are fixed, a change in the result is far more likely to reflect a real change in the player, not a change in how the test was run.

Six data points across a season are a trend, and a trend is the thing that actually tells a player, a parent, or a coach whether the training in between is working.
What this looks like over a season
In practice, this means a testing sheet that fills in month by month: broad jump, vertical jump, 0-10m sprint, agility shuttle, pull-ups, tracked player by player, session by session. No single month's number carries much weight by itself. The value shows up when the line across five or six sessions moves, or doesn't, which is its own useful information for adjusting a training plan.
The honest limits of this
A repeated protocol makes results comparable within itself. It doesn't automatically make them comparable to a different team's numbers, a different testing location, or a different measurement setup, unless that other setup followed the exact same protocol. That's worth being upfront about: a consistent method builds a trustworthy record for one player or one team over time. It isn't, on its own, a basis for ranking players against results collected somewhere else under different conditions.
That's a deliberate trade-off. A narrower, honest comparison beats a broader one that doesn't hold up to scrutiny.
